I'm a big believer in old-fashioned books and a fireplace. Makes it seem sort of luxurious to be out of power, closed off from the socials. Also, if its a winter storm that's cut off the power, building outdoor igloos to save the freezer food is always good. If you don't have bears in the area, anyway...

That's a great tip! For people who have detached garages, you can also store stuff there. It won't be freezer cold, but fridge cold.

You can also fill a top loading washing machine with ice and use it as an ice box

I've been lucky in recent years to have very limited experience with storms bad enough to knock out electricity for long periods of time...or worse be climbing a mountain. But the cards by lantern light sounds good!

A survival guide I read a long time ago recommended that everyone should spend one hour each day doing something tech-free. The idea is that if your way of life is interrupted by a catastrophe, you'll be able to keep a clear head.

I think it's a neat idea for all of us to practice.

Also, it's now occurring to me how localized certain natural disasters could be. Where I grew up, the water table was too high for in-ground power lines, so they went down a lot.

Now, I live someplace outages are super rare. I almost miss that experience when watching a storm....

Actually, maybe a few hours a day! So nice to unplug, esp. when you don’t have to.

Yep, surviving the apocalypse is a subject nearly as popular these days as Outlaw Country. It's a unifying theme.
